Mandeville lecture 2012

With standing ovations for laureate Jean-Claude Trichet we ended a long and memorable day devoted to the crisis in the eurozone. I thought it was remarkable how modest Trichet had remained, despite his many obvious achievements. His views on the way forward, expressed in his lecture, were far-reaching and controversial, and went beyond the call for gentle integration pursued by the EU president. His criticism of the Dutch main actors was subtle but clear: the Netherlands was once a country where modern market economies were invented, and now we seem to be holding back. Wherever did we go wrong? I would like to express my gratitude to all of our colleagues who worked hard over many months to turn this day into the big success that it undeniably was.
