Voorzitter College van Bestuur
In: Erasmus12 May 2011
I am writing this blog on my way to an offsite meeting with my colleagues from all Dutch universities, united in the so-called VSNU AB (algemeen bestuur). The agenda contains big themes, such as the future of the university landscape under the current government. Tomorrow, Staatssecretaris Halbe Zijlstra will grace us with his presence.
Looking at the abstraction level of the items we will discuss, I cannot suppress a smile. Only this morning, we approved the design of the new student pavillion on campus. It will be both iconic and a landmark of sustainability, united in a beautiful design. Only yesterday, I had the pleasure of opening the tree shack constructed by volunteers out of waste wood from trees on campus. Such concrete acts contrast sharply with abstract notions of sector governance which are en vogue in The Hague. And yet, we have to keep playing chess on both boards in a parallel game, to ensure that the voice of Erasmus continues to be heard.
