Back to the future?

Many professors in their golden years must have conjured up memories of the sixties last week. The unprecedented protest of scholars against budget cuts and penalties (for students who need more than n+2 for a Bachelors and a Masters degree) reminded many of the days when the whole of Europe appeared to be rioting in the streets, 1968. It was an impressive sight, indeed, some 1,500 professors in gown and parafernalia marching from the houses of Parliament to the Anton Philips concert hall in The Hague. While not much later, thousands of students gathered in protest on an open space in the Hague to hear politicians and representatives from universities addressing them in support. It is rare to see so much unity among students and academics alike. Might there be some truth in what they say? For details, please check out the VSNU website www.vsnu.nl.
