ISS dies

Professor Leo de Haan gave his inaugural address on the occasion of the dies natalis of ISS yesterday. I am always astonished to see how well connected ISS is, and how many prominent friends attend its ceremonies. This is a real testimonial to the work of several colleagues who have built the reputation of the institute over time. At the reception afterwards, I had an opportunity to chat with the Mayor of the Hague about is vision for the development of the Hague Academic coalition, of which ISS was one of the founding partners. It is clear that there is a larger role to play for the EUR within the context of the cooperation with the universities of Leiden and Delft. The Hague is very ambitious in its desire to attract higher education around a number of themes, including the International City of Justice. Clearly, we will explore and pursue this opportunity further in the months to come.

Pauline van der Meer Mohr is president of the Executive Board and is responsible for general administrative matters, such as the relationship with the Board of Trustees and the University Council. She focuses on the strategic policy, international affairs and external contacts, including the Rotterdam region, industry and other knowledge institutions.

Geachte mevrouw van der Meer,
Ik wil informeren dat er een onderwerp is dat zich leent voor een gezamenlijke aanpak door verschillende universiteiten, bovendien praktijk gericht is, door een alumnus wordt aangedragen en de benadering van Tinbergen weer in de spotlight plaatst. Het betreft de toepassing van Mechanism Design Theory op de voorziening van essentiel goederen en diensten in ontwikkelingslanden.
De Princeton University verzoek hiervoor papers; ik heb Prof Kaymak van ERIM, Dr de Weerdt van de TUD en Dr Erik Stam van de UU tevens staflid van de WRR bereid gevonden hieraan mee te werken en zo de gevoerde dialoog met hen te concretiseren. Leiden zou zich hierbij kunnen aansluiten. Dit is een onderwerp met 1000 vaders en haakt in op de uitdaging van Heertje, Maskin en Myerson.
Mijn vraag is hoe u er in slaagt personen zo ver te krijgen dat zij bij u onderwerpen aandragen die passen in uw strategie; ik heb mij nauwelijks ontdaan van pek en veren.
