‘No women, no peace!’ Shirin Ebadi

“The world needs peace in order to survive and have tranquillity. And peace needs the procreative spirit of women in order to sustain itself.”

Tuesday 25 November @ ISS, 16:00 – 17:45 – Source

Shirin-Ebadi-290x290Women are often stereotyped as victims and their experiences and contributions to building peace and democracy disregarded. Currently hundreds of young women and girls are leaving their homes to join Islamic fighters. At the same time the IS extremists police, target and kill women who challenge their traditional role in society. Female leaders are crucial to establish a durable peace. What can women do to stand up for their rights? What proactive role can women play in the peacekeeping  process? How can we support these women and put a stop to the violence against them?

The Iranian jurist Dr. Shirin Ebadi will talk about the role of women in promoting peace and democracy in the Middle East. She is a renowned human rights activist, former judge and the first Iranian winner of the Nobel Peace Prize of 2003 for her pioneering efforts in promoting democracy and human rights. Since 2009 she has lived in exile in the United Kingdom to escape the relentless persecution by the Iranian government. She works tirelessly for the rights of women, children and refugees.
