The Power of One

Human Rights Watch organizes the Human Rights Weekend every year at the Balie in Amsterdam. This year it will be held from January 29 until the 31st.

The program will be full with films, debates and masterclasses. It would be great if ISS via social media and the website could get attention for the weekend.

The entire program is in Dutch and in English online on the website of de Balie:

The lecture will take place in the University Aula at the EUR Woudestein campus on 9 June 2016.

The South African human rights lawyer was United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights at the United Nations from 2008 to 2014. She previously served as the first non-white judge at the South African High Court, President of the Rwanda tribunal and judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

Fight against inequality, injustice and violence

Honorary Supervisors Kirsten Henrard, Professor of Human Rights at the Erasmus School of Law, and Karin Arts, Professor of International Law and Development from the International Institute of Social Studies, will present the honorary doctorate.

The title is being given to Pillay because of her ‘long-term fight against inequality, injustice and violence’. During her career, the South African lawyer has acted for vulnerable groups of women, minorities, homosexuals, bisexuals and transgender persons.

The Mandeville lecture is an initiative from the university, the Rotterdam business community and the Erasmus Trust Fund. An official honorary doctorate is also connected to the ceremony from this year. The distinction is intended as a token of appreciation of the invited speaker’s services to society.

Previous laureates include Jean-Claude Trichet, Lilian Gonçalves and Carla Del Ponte

The atmosphere is informal and participants create an encouraging setting in which stories (max 5 minutes) from all over the world are shared. Special guest this year is the novelist Petina Gappah from Zimbabwe. For more information: http://www.iss.nl/news_events/iss_news/detail/article/79260-world-storytelling/
