In June 2013, the Sexuality Research Initiative organized its inaugural event Intercultural Dialogue (ICD) on Sexuality, Reproductive Health and Rights in Development: ‘Going Beyond the Comfort Zone’.

In the daily routines of academics, professionals and activists opportunities to take a step back and look at the bigger picture are scarce; moments to question already existing and deeply rooted assumptions are even more rare. It was with this in mind that the organizers of the Intercultural Dialogue (ICD) on Sexuality, Reproductive Health and Rights in Development entitled the meeting: Going Beyond the Comfort Zone.

The starting point of the Sexuality Research Initiative (SRI) at the ISS is that the domain of sexuality needs to be more explicitly understood and integrated into development studies. The intercultural dialogue was an occasion to bring together potential partners to discuss collectively how to design a research agenda which could focus on different aspects of sexuality in development research.

Together with the Institute of Health Policy & Management (iBMG), Erasmus University Rotterdam, and KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation (KNCV-TB) the ISS Sexuality Research Initiative organized the ICD from  3-6 June 2013 at ISS in The Hague.
